YOU WANT MY SOUL AND MY BOYFRIEND?

Trying to work things out with Nash—her maybe boyfriend—is hard enough for Kaylee Cavanaugh. She can’t just pretend nothing happened. But “complicated” doesn’t even begin to describe their relationship when his ex-girlfriend transfers to their school, determined to take Nash back.

See, Sabine isn’t just an ordinary girl. She’s a mara, the living personification of a nightmare. She can read people’s fears—and craft them into nightmares while her victims sleep. Feeding from human fear is how she survives.

And Sabine isn’t above scaring Kaylee and the entire school to death to get whatever—and whoever—she wants.

I DON'T THINK SO.

I think that Rachel Vincent’s novels are the hardest to review. Why? Her books always leave me a little bit angry. I’m not angry at her writing style, she is a great writer. What makes me angry are her characters. I won’t give spoilers away for this novel but in the past novels Kaylee has been my favourite character. In this one while I still like her and she is still my favourite character she did things I didn’t agree with. On the other hand all of the characters were a little infuriating in their choices. Though I know this is true to life and everyone is different ... it still made me angry. I like things realistic to a point but I am a happy-ever-after sort of girl. I read romances and I watch generally happy shows like Glee, although I love Sons of Anarchy which is anything but happy. I can handle some drama, one of my favourite book series is the Succubus series by Richelle Mead and that has drama. There are just a lot of downs in these books, along with some highs.

The good thing about this? I am obviously invested in the characters, while reading I get mad, I feel bad for them and I really, really want Kaylee to have a happy ending. How do I see that ending? Hopefully with Nash and with only Sabine only as a platonic friend but that is just my opinion. I really have no clue what is going to happen. I have seen Rachel leave a comment somewhere that If I Die is a huge series changer and this worries me because there has been so much upheaval already but I will buy it, I will read it and I will enjoy it. Because even with all my sad avoidance issues I do like this series and Kaylee is an awesome character that I hope survives, both her dramatic social life (with Nash by her side!) and obviously the creatures of the Netherworld that hope to kill her.

  1. I have exactly the same issue with Vincent's books - so good, but DAMN the characters make me angry! Great review.
