My Soul to Steal - Rachel Vincent

Title: My Soul to Steal
Author: Rachel Vincent
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Published: January 1, 2011
Rating: Young Adult
Received: Bought copy/NetGalley

YOU WANT MY SOUL AND MY BOYFRIEND?

Trying to work things out with Nash—her maybe boyfriend—is hard enough for Kaylee Cavanaugh. She can’t just pretend nothing happened. But “complicated” doesn’t even begin to describe their relationship when his ex-girlfriend transfers to their school, determined to take Nash back.

See, Sabine isn’t just an ordinary girl. She’s a mara, the living personification of a nightmare. She can read people’s fears—and craft them into nightmares while her victims sleep. Feeding from human fear is how she survives.

And Sabine isn’t above scaring Kaylee and the entire school to death to get whatever—and whoever—she wants.

I DON'T THINK SO.

I think that Rachel Vincent’s novels are the hardest to review. Why? Her books always leave me a little bit angry. I’m not angry at her writing style, she is a great writer. What makes me angry are her characters. I won’t give spoilers away for this novel but in the past novels Kaylee has been my favourite character. In this one while I still like her and she is still my favourite character she did things I didn’t agree with. On the other hand all of the characters were a little infuriating in their choices. Though I know this is true to life and everyone is different ... it still made me angry. I like things realistic to a point but I am a happy-ever-after sort of girl. I read romances and I watch generally happy shows like Glee, although I love Sons of Anarchy which is anything but happy. I can handle some drama, one of my favourite book series is the Succubus series by Richelle Mead and that has drama. There are just a lot of downs in these books, along with some highs.

The good thing about this? I am obviously invested in the characters, while reading I get mad, I feel bad for them and I really, really want Kaylee to have a happy ending. How do I see that ending? Hopefully with Nash and with only Sabine only as a platonic friend but that is just my opinion. I really have no clue what is going to happen. I have seen Rachel leave a comment somewhere that If I Die is a huge series changer and this worries me because there has been so much upheaval already but I will buy it, I will read it and I will enjoy it. Because even with all my sad avoidance issues I do like this series and Kaylee is an awesome character that I hope survives, both her dramatic social life (with Nash by her side!) and obviously the creatures of the Netherworld that hope to kill her.

Most Anticipated Reads of 2011 - Top 11 (with 9 Runner-Ups)

In no particular order(choosing 11 was hard enough :D)
Also with spoilers for previous books in the series:

1. Lover Unleashed - J R Ward
Book # 9 in the Black Dagger Brotherhood
Releasing: March 29, 2011

Why? Qhuinn and BlayI loved their story in Lover Enshrined and Lover Mine and I am so excited for their journey even if in this book they get worse instead of better. :( Of course I am interested in Payne's romance with Manny, any Black Dagger Brotherhood novel is better than no Black Dagger Brotherhood novel. :)

2. Dreams of a Dark Warrior - Kresley Cole
Book # 11 (including short stories) in the Immortals After Dark Series
Releasing: February 15, 2011

Why? This is a new-to-me series. I start
ed reading it in September and broke my book buying rule of no new authors. Some of the novels don't leave me as excited and happy as others but they are all amazing in their own way. This novel makes me particularly excited because I have no clue how Kresley is going to pull off this happily ever after!

3. Succubus Revealed - Richelle Mead
#6 in the Georgina Kincaid Series
Releasing: August 30, 2011
NOTE: Book cover has not been released, this picture is of the first book in the series

Why? It is the finale of the Georgina Kincaid series and this is my favorite series from Rich
elle Mead. A lot of the books have Georgina going through bad things and she definitely deserves a happy ending. I'm hoping it goes my way but even if it doesn't I will just be happy that Georgina gets closure and of course I am excited for more Seth. :D

4. Kiss of Snow - Nalini Singh
Book # 10 in the Psy/Changeling Series
Releasing: May 31, 2011

Why? Sienna and Hawke; Hawke and Sienna. I was actually never that excited for this book but as I read Play of Passion I saw the potential for an amazing story and now I really want it. One of my favorite things about this series is that you also get to see past couples and it actually makes sense for them to be there. I'm just as excited to see my favorites as I am for Hawke and Sienna!

5. City of Fallen Angels - Cassandra Clare
Book #4 in the Mortal Instruments
Series
Releasing: April 5, 2011

Why? I loved the first three and wo
uld have been happy if Cassandra had left the story alone but I can't say no to more Clary and Jace. I also can't say no to more Magnus and Alec and from the teasers that have been released I will be happy with this novel. :)

6. Eternal Rider - Larissa Ione
Book #1 in the Lords of Deliverance Series
Releasing: March 29, 2010

Why? I love her Demonica series and this is a spin-off. So, more of the s
ame world, new couples and learning about the other couples. I have read somewhere that Kynan will be shown a lot and that makes me happy because I love his and Gem's storyline. Also, yay for updates on the baby situations :)

7. Aftermath - Ann Aguirre
#5 in the Sirantha Jax Series
Releasing: September 2011
NOTE: Book cover has not been released, this picture is of the first book in the series

Why? It is Ann Aguirre. Also the ending to Killbox was a huge cliffhanger and I want to know what is going to happen to Jax and March and the crew. I love this world and one of my favorite characters is Vel so I am hoping that there is more of him. His and Jax's relationship is almost as amazing as Jax and March's which is saying something because I usually care most about the ma
in couple. I'm just excited!

8. Demon Marked - Meljean Brook
#7 in the Guardian Series
Releasing: August 2, 2011

Why? I have loved all of the rest of this series. The last book, Demon Blood, became one of my favorites :) I've read the summary for this novel and it sounds amazing. We are only really introduced to one of the main characters but Meljean always makes great woman characters and I believe that this new woman protagonist will be just as strong.

9. Overbite - Meg Cabot
#2 in the Insatiable Series
Releasing: July 5, 2011
NOTE: Book cover has not been released, this picture is of the first book in the series

Why? It actually took me a long time to read Insatiable, the first novel in this series. I honestly can't say why. Meg Cabot is definitely in my top authors list and I almost own all of her backlist. I do wish I had read Insatiable earlier because it was amazing and now I really want Overbite. Meena is in a love triangle in this series and I would love to know who she will choose. At this point I actually don't mind who she chooses but closure would be nice.

10. Magic Slays - Ilona Andrews
#5 in the Kate Daniels Series
Releasing: May 31, 2011

Why? Kate and Curran are one of my favorite couples. They are realistic and a couple you want to just keep reading about. I wouldn't mind them just grocery shopping. Of course Ilona Andrews wouldn't write that, all of the books in this series are action full and ones that don't want to be put down!

11. Unseen - Rachel Caine
#3 in the Outcast Season Series
Releasing: February 1, 2011

Why? I have read and loved this series from the beginning. It started as a spinoff of Rachel Caine's Weather Warden series but it has grown into its own. As my list demonstrates relationships are really important to me and I enjoy this main couple. They are not being rushed and are coming into their own. I've read that there is more on the relationship front in this novel and that makes me really excited. But honestly the series is good for more than just the relationship, there is action and of course there are powers; controlling the earth or fire, what more could you want in a series?

- Iron Crowned - Richelle Mead
- Bloodlines - Richelle Mead
